Cells Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
To control the overall activity of the cell
What is the function of the chloroplast?
Site of photosynthesis
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Site of respiration
What is the function of the vacuole?
Storage (mainly of water)
What is the function of the cell membrane?
To control what goes in and out of the cell
What is the function of the cell wall?
To give the cell structure
Name three differences between plant cells and animal cells
Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts and a vacuole whereas animal cells do not
Why don’t animal cells need a cell wall
Animals have a skeleton or exoskeleton to give them structure or support whereas plants don’t so plant cells individually need support
Why don’t animal cells have chloroplasts?
Animals eat food for energy but plants are producers and need to carry out photosynthesis to make their own food for energy
What do we use to see cells?
Microscopes
What part of the microscope do you look through and it helps magnify the slide?
Eye piece lens
What part of the microscope changes the type of lens you are using to see the cells?
Rotating nose piece
Under what lens do you look at cells as closely as possible?
High power lens
What focus knob do you use to focus under low power?
Coarse focus
What part of the microscope do you put the slide on?
