matter Flashcards
what are the 3 states of matter?
solid liquid gas
what is solid to liquid called?
melting
what is liquid to gas?
evaporation/boiling
what is gas to liquid?
condensation
what is liquid to solid?
freezing
what is the movement and arrangement of particles in a solid?
in the solid state the vibrating particles form a regular pattern. this explain the fixed shape of a solid and why it can’t be compressed or poured.
what is the movement and arrangement of particles in a liquid?
in a liquid the particles still touch their neighbours but they move around sliding over eachother. this is why you can pour but not compress a liquid.
close packed irregular structure.
what is the movement and arrangement of of particles in a gas?
in a gas state, widely spaced particles move around randomly and rapidly. this explains why you can compress a liquid.
what happens to the particles in a substance when it is heated up?
when you hear particles they gain energy and move faster, the intermolecular forces can be broken to change a substance to solid –> liquid
what happens to the particles in a substance when it’s cooled down?
when they cool down the particles move less and come closer together. more intermolecular forces occur.
what is evaporation?
evaporation is also the change of state from liquid to gas that happens at any temperature. it can only happen to particles at the surfaces
