filteration, crystalisation, distillation, chromotography Flashcards
what is filtration?
filtration is used to separate an insoluable solid from a liquid. it can also separate a solution from an insoluable solid.
how does filtration work?
pour the mixture through filter paper in a filter funnel, leaving residue in the filter paper and the liquid in a beaker.
what is chromatography?
when a solution that contains more than one dissolved substance those substances can be separated using chromatography.
how does chromatography work?
add a dot of the ink on to the chromatography paper, dip the paper in water, allowing the water to rise up the paper, separating the different colours in the ink.
what is distillation?
to separate two liquids with different boiling points we use a separating technique known as distillation.
how does distillation work?
heat both liquids in a round-bottomed flask, the liquid with the lowest boiling point will boil then condense once it reaches the condenser separating the two liquids.
what is crystallisation?
to separate a solvable solid which is in a solution such as salt dissolved in water we use crystallisation.
how do you do crystallisation?
heat the mixture in an evaporating basin using a bunsen burner allowing the liquid to boil (evaporate) leaving the salt as crystals
