Substitution

A
  • replacing a variable with a value. Rule/Steps:
    E.g 2b + 2p + 2r. 1. Written expression
    =(2) + 2(-1) + 2(5). 2. Us in values
    =2 -2 + 2. 3. Simplify

Q

Adding fractions

A
  • make denominators the same

- whatever you do to the denominator, do to numerator

17
Q

Definition of fraction

A

Represents part of a whole

18
Q

Equivalent fraction definition

A

Value remains same
Digits change
E.g 3/5 is equivalent to 9/14

19
Q

Cross check method

A

E.g 3/4 = 15/20
=3times 20= 4times 15
Correct!

20
Q

Simplest form definition & finding simplest form

A

The numerator & denominator have no other common denominator than 1.
Divide both n & d by HCF. (must be same number)

21
Q

Comparing mixed fractions & fractions

A

Comparing fractions= 1. Find LCM of denominator
2. Find equivalent fractions with common denominators
3. Compare fractions
Comparing mixed fractions= 1. Whole numbers stay same, find LCM of denominator in fractions
2. Find equivalent fractions with common denominators
3. Compare fractions

22
Q

Comparing fractions & mixed fractions on a number line

A
  1. Find LCM of all denominators
  2. Find equivalent fractions with same common denominator
  3. Draw appropriate time line, divide into equal parts (LCM values), label fractions
23
Q

Adding fractions (same denominators, unlike denominators)

A
Same= add numerator, simplify
Unlike= make denominator the same using LCM, add numerator, simplify
24
Q

Subtracting fractions (like, different denominators.)

A

Like denominators~Estimate, subtract numerators, leave denomi, write answer mixed simplified.
Unlike denominators~Estimate, identify LCM all denomi, rewrite with denomi LCM, subtract numerators, write simplified/mixed

25
Q

Multiplying fractions and cancelling down method

A

Basically just multiply nu by nu and de by de!
To cancel down you can cancel down any common factors, must be a nu and de (not a nu and nu or de and de)
Check out fractions flip no. 8 in flip book

26
Q

Dividing fractions

A

Save it, change it, flip it. E.g. 4 divided by 1/2 =8

4. Times. 2/1. (Becomes 4 times 2/1) =8

27
Q

Dividend and Divisor definition

A

Dividend= the thing (numeral) you are dividing
Divisor=by what you are dividing the thing (dividend)
E.g= 12 divided by 3 12 is dividend, 3 is divisor
