Maths, Sem 2, (Yr 7) Flashcards
Variable
-A variable/pro numeral is a letter/s used to represent an unknown number e.g x,ab,y
Coefficient
- A number that multiplies a variable
- multiply sign is hidden e.g 3x
Operation
- addition, multiplication, subtraction, division e.g +
Constant
-A number that doesn’t have a variable “attached” to it
Terms
- E.g 3x+4
3x = term, +4 = term
Expression
-Collection of terms subtracted or added together e.g 5m+8d
Equation
- 2 expressions found either side of an equals sign e.g
1a+2b = 3c-4d
Like Terms
- Number with the same pronumeral/s e.g 3ab and 7ba
- No indices between or at the end
- Pronumerals way be in different order
Substitution
- replacing a variable with a value. Rule/Steps:
E.g 2b + 2p + 2r. 1. Written expression
=(2) + 2(-1) + 2(5). 2. Us in values
=2 -2 + 2. 3. Simplify
4. Solve
The Cartesian plane
The have a:
- x axis
- y axis
- origin
- quadrants (1,2,3,4)
Finding value of x
•X/3 + 4 = 7 •x=
/3. +4
X = x/3 = x/3 +4
9=. 3. 7
x3. -4
How to simplify
Collect all like terms (numbers before Pronumerals can be different) include symbol before the term when simplifying
Inverse definition
Means opposite, used in backtracking
Forms of fractions
2 1/2= 2=whole number 1=numerator /=viniculum 2=denominator
Proper, improper, mixed fractions
Proper-numerator smaller than denominator
Improper-numerator bigger than denominator
Mixed-whole number and fraction
Adding fractions
- make denominators the same
- whatever you do to the denominator, do to numerator
Definition of fraction
Represents part of a whole
Equivalent fraction definition
Value remains same
Digits change
E.g 3/5 is equivalent to 9/14
Cross check method
E.g 3/4 = 15/20
=3times 20= 4times 15
Correct!
Simplest form definition & finding simplest form
The numerator & denominator have no other common denominator than 1.
Divide both n & d by HCF. (must be same number)
Comparing mixed fractions & fractions
Comparing fractions= 1. Find LCM of denominator
2. Find equivalent fractions with common denominators
3. Compare fractions
Comparing mixed fractions= 1. Whole numbers stay same, find LCM of denominator in fractions
2. Find equivalent fractions with common denominators
3. Compare fractions
Comparing fractions & mixed fractions on a number line
- Find LCM of all denominators
- Find equivalent fractions with same common denominator
- Draw appropriate time line, divide into equal parts (LCM values), label fractions
Adding fractions (same denominators, unlike denominators)
Same= add numerator, simplify Unlike= make denominator the same using LCM, add numerator, simplify
Subtracting fractions (like, different denominators.)
Like denominators~Estimate, subtract numerators, leave denomi, write answer mixed simplified.
Unlike denominators~Estimate, identify LCM all denomi, rewrite with denomi LCM, subtract numerators, write simplified/mixed
