Mathematics Flashcards
Prime vs. Composite number
A prime number is a natural number greater than 1 that cannot be formed by multiplying two smaller natural numbers.
Ex. 5 is prime because the only ways of writing it as a product, 1 × 5 or 5 × 1, involve 5 itself
Composite is any number that isn’t prime
Rational number
A real number that includes integers, whole numbers, natural numbers
rational number is a number that can be written as a fraction. Can be positive or negative.
Irrational Number
A number that cannot be expressed as a fraction for any integers and have decimal expansions that neither terminate nor become periodic. nonrepeating decimals
Negative exponent
5^-2 = 1/5^2
1/9^-2 = 9^2
2^-1 = 1/2
Adding Fractions
Step 1: Make sure the bottom numbers (the denominators) are the same
Step 2: Add the top numbers (the numerators), put that answer over the denominator
Step 3: Simplify the fraction (if needed)
1/3 + 1/5 = 8/15
Subtracting fractions
Step 1. Make sure the bottom numbers (the denominators) are the same
Step 2. Subtract the top numbers (the numerators). Put the answer over the same denominator.
Step 3. Simplify the fraction (if needed).
1/2-1/6 = 2/6

Inequality Rules
- Flip sign when dividing or multiplying by (-) # in inequality
- what you do to one side of an inequality you do to the other in a double sided inequality
Square Root rules
- Positive root and Negative root= absolute value ex. √25= 5 or -5
- Can’t square root a negative number ex.√-16 🙅🏽♀️
Function rules
- A function cannot have 2 different y-values paired with the same x-value (9,3) (9,-3)
- Proportional functions y/x=k
Standard form of linear equation
Ax+By=C
Mean absolute deviation
Step 1: Calculate the mean.
Step 2: Calculate how far away each data point is from the mean using positive distances. These are called absolute deviations.
Step 3: Add those deviations together.
Step 4: Divide the sum by the number of data points.
