Math vocabulary Flashcards
Inverse operations are opposite operations that undo each other. Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Multiplication and division are inverse operations.
Inverse operations
A list of numbers that follow a certain sequence or pattern
Number pattern
The word “commutative” comes from “commute” or “move around”, so the Commutative Property is the one that refers to moving stuff around. For addition, the rule is “a + b = b + a”; in numbers, this means 2 + 3 = 3 + 2. For multiplication, the rule is “ab = ba”; in numbers, this means 2×3 = 3×2.
Communitive property
states that you can add or multiply regardless of how the numbers are grouped
Associative property
is an algebra property which is used to multiply a single term and two or more terms inside a set of parentheses
Distributive property
a statement that the values of two mathematical expressions are equal (indicated by the sign =)
Equation
not consistent or having a fixed pattern; liable to change
Variable
the action of separating something into parts, or the process of being separated
Division
separate or be separated into parts.
Divided
a number by which another number is to be divided.
Divisor
a result obtained by dividing one quantity by another
Quotient
are different fractions that name the same number
Equivalent Fractions
is a rational number written as a fraction where the numerator is one and the denominator is a positive integer
Unit fractions
the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a container, especially when great.
Volume
mass is a property of a physical body. It is a measure of an object’s resistance to acceleration (a change in its state of motion) when a force is applied. It also determines the strength of its mutual gravitational attraction to other bodies
