Math Vocabulary 3rd Quarter Flashcards
Algebra 1
A number, variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables with whole number exponents.
Monomial
a monomial or sum of monomials.
Polynomial
the sum of the exponents of the variables in the monomial.
Degree of a monomial
a polynomial with two terms.
Binomial
a polynomial with three terms.
Trinomial
the coefficient of the first term in standard form.
Leading coefficient
when the exponents of the terms decrease from left to right.
Standard form
a set is closed under an operation within the operation performed on any two numbers in the set results in a number that is also in the set.
Closed under an operation
a method of applying the Distributive Property, a short cut for multiplying two binomials.
FOIL Method
if factors have a product of zero, one or more of the factors is equal to zero.
Zero-Product Property
when a polynomial is written as a product of factors.
Factored form
when two or more solutions of an equation are the same number.
Repeated Roots
a polynomial made up of two perfect squares being subtracted.
Difference of Squares
a polynomial that can be expressed as the square of a binomial.
Perfect Square Trinomial
grouping a of polynomials into pairs and factoring the GCF out of each pair. Then factoring out the common binomial factor.
