Math Vocab Flashcards
Order of operations
In mathematics and computer programming, the order of operations (or operator precedence) is a collection of rules that define which procedures to perform first in order to evaluate a given mathematical expression.
Function
a relationship or expression involving one or more variables.
Ordered pair
An ordered pair is a pair of numbers used to locate a point on a coordinate plane; the first number tells how far to move horizontally and the second number tells how far to move vertically.
Coordinates
It is formed by a horizontal number line, called the x-axis, and a vertical number line, called the y-axis.
Scientific notation
Or it might be a small number, like 0.0000073. Scientific notation is a way to make these numbers easier to work with.
Numerator
In mathematics, the number that appears on the top of a fraction. In the fraction 2/3, the numerator is 2.
Denominators
The denominator is the bottom part of a fraction. For example, in the fraction 3/4, the denominator is 4.
Reciprocal
Every number has a reciprocal except 0 (1/0 is undefined) The reciprocal is shown as 1/x, or x-1. When we multiply a number by its reciprocal we get 1.
Mean
The “mean” is the “average” you’re used to, where you add up all the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers.
Median
The “mean” is the “average” you’re used to, where you add up all the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers.
Mode
To find the median, your numbers have to be listed in numerical order, so you may have to rewrite your list first. The “mode” is the value that occurs most often.
Range
To find the median, your numbers have to be listed in numerical order, so you may have to rewrite your list first. The “mode” is the value that occurs most often.
