Math Packet #4 Flashcards
Electronic - Infusion “IV” Pump Formula
mL/hr
Side note:
- The mL/h flow rate must be a whole number, if decimal round to nearest whole number.
- mL = MD order
Manual IV Formula
mL/min x gtt(DF)/mL
Explanation:
“mL” = MD order / “min” - 60min
x
“DF/gtt” = drop factor tube rate size / mL
EX: 133mL/60 mins x 10gtt/mL
Side note:
- The gtt/min drop rate must be a whole number, if decimal round to nearest whole number.
Manual IV Shortcut Method
mL/h /DF constant = gtt/min
EX:
Order D5W 1,000 mL IV to infuse at 200 mL/h
Drop Factor: 15gtt/mL
200mL/4min x gtt/mL
divide both 200 & 4 by 4
= 50gtt/min
Manual: Drop Factor (DF) - tube rate size
10
15
20
60
(tube sizing will be on label)
Drop Factor (DF) constant
10 DF > 60min = 6min
- 60/10=6
15 DF > 60min = 4min
- 60/15 = 4
20 DF > 60min = 3 min
- 60/20 = 3
60 DF > 60min = 1 min
- 60/60 = 1
L = mL equivalent
1 L = 1,000 mL
multiply the volume value by 1000
What to do when equation is: XmL / 45min (Infusion)
must multiply by 60min/1hr
EX:
- 100mL / 45 mins
multiply by 60min/1hr
- 100mL/45 min x 60min/1hr
60 min / by 4 = 15
45min / by 15 = 3
cancel out min and multiply across;
- 100mL/3 x 4/hr = 400mL/3hr
then divide 400mL/3hr
- 400ml/3hr = 133.3
round to nearest whole number
Answer = 133ml/hr or gtt/min
