Math Flashcards
Correlation coefficient
Measure of strength of a linear correlation
Bias
Bias occurs when a survey contains flawed questions, or if a chosen sample does not represent the population
Correlation
Relationship between two variables
When given a scatterplot, you can have a
Correlation: positive, negative or no correlation
Strength: strong or weak
Direction: increasing or decreasing
Statistical investigation, process steps
- Identify the problem-clarify the problem in formulate questions that can be answered with data
- Collect data-design and implement a plan to collect or obtain appropriate data.
- Analyze data-select and apply appropriate techniques to analyze the data.
- Interpret and communicate the results-interpret the results of analysis in a way that relates to the original question
Census
A type of survey that involves collecting data from the entire population of interest
Sample
A smaller group of individuals chosen to represent the population
Advantages of data
-helps us identify patterns/relationships
-Helps us build knowledge
-Can help someone make better decisions
-helps find cures to diseases
Disadvantages of data
-Data breaches
-Security and privacy
-Media exaggerating data
-Misrepresentation of information
-bias when collecting data
Some of the ways that can be misrepresented
- Use of an inappropriate graph.
- Misuse of scale or intervals.
- Misuse of diagram dimensions
- Leaving out information, or placement of information.
- Using an improper sample
(small or non-representative)
