What is maternal deprivation
Focussed on the idea that continual presence of mother or mother substitute is essential for normal psychological development od babies and toddlers both emotionally and intellectually
Seperation= simply means not being in presence of primary attachment figure
Deprivation= if the child if the child is deprived from emotional care eg if mother is present but has depression
The critical period
The first two and a half years of life is seen by bowlby as the critical period if child deprived from mother or substitute for an extended duration during this critical period then psychological damage was inevitable
Effects od development
Emotional- affection less psychopathy is the inability to experience gout or strong emotion towards others
Is associated with criminality and affects ability to form fiffilli g relationships
Intellectual- would experience delayed intellectual development particularly low IQ
44 thieves study
Procedure 44 criminal teenagers accused od stealing
All thieves were interviewed for signs od affectionlsss psychopathy characterised as a lack of affacetion lack of guilt and lack of empathy
Families were also interviewed to see if the thieves had experienced prolonged early separations
Sample compared to a control group of 44 non criminal criminal but emotionally disturbed people
FINDINGS- 14/44 thieves could be described as affection less psychopaths and 12 of them had experienced critical separation in critical period
In contrast only 5/30 remaining thieves experienced maternal deprivation
Only 2/44 control group experienced separations

Bowlby himself carried out both family and thief interviews - left him with bias before conducting interviews as he knew what teens he expected to show signs of psychopathy
