van ljzendoorn and kroonenburg
research
conducted a survey to look at the proportions of secure insecure avoidant and insecure resistant attachments accross a range of countries to asses the cultural variation
procedure researchers located 32 studies of attachment using strange situation across 8 countries
the data was meta analysed
findings
wide variation between the proportions of attachment types in different studies
in all countries secure attachment was the most common
in individualist countries cultures the rate of insecure resistant were same as original sample under 14 percent
in collectivist cultures these rates were above 25
italian study vs korean study
assessed 76 babies of 12months
half were secure 36percent avoidant
more mothers in professional positions
only one baby was avoidant out of 87
similar child rearing style to japan
evaluation strengths
+ most studies conducted by indegenous researchers meaning cross cultural problems can be avoided such as schemas or language barriers
enhancing validity
HOWEVER- not been true of all cross cultural research
evaluation limitations
- confounding variables sample charecteristics such as poverty class or age can confound the results
environmental factors such as the toys in the room may affect baby behaviour - trying to impose a test designed for one culture onto another culture
imposed etic is when we assume an idea that works in one culture will work in another. this may result in the results being meaningless.
