Materials Of The Solid Earth Flashcards

1
Q

What is a rock cycle? And what are the three main types of Rock?

A

The rock cycle is a series of processes that transform one rock type into another.

Igneous- sedimentary and Metamorphic

Q

What are the Basic Cycle?

A

Magma: Crystallization above or below ground to form igneous rock.
Lithification: conversion of sediment through compaction and crystallization by groundwater to form sedimentary rock.
Mathmorphism: change due to high temperatures and pressure below ground form metamorphic rock.

Q

What is an Alternative Path?

A

Rocks can take various routes through the rock cycle, including direct transformations from igneous to metamorphic.

Q

What is the earth internal heat and External processes?

A

Earth internal heat: is the responsible for igneous and metamorphic rock formation

External Processes: powered by the sun create sedimentary rock through weathering and erosion

Q

What is Extrusive and intrusive Rock?

A

Extrusive rock: are formed on the surface of earth.
Intrusive rock: are formed inside earth

Q

What is magma composition, crystallization and how are crystal size determined?

A

Magma: are molten rock composed of of ions of delicate minerals, mainly silicon and oxygen.
Crystallization: as magma cools, mobile ions organize into orderly patterns.
Crystals size are determined by the cooling rate(fast cool mean small crystal and slow cooling mean large crystal)

Q

What is Magmatic differentiation?

A

It is the process in which minerals within a magma selectively remove certain chemicals elements from the molten rock.

Q

What is the formation of coal?

A

Occurs through the accumulation of plant remains in oxygen deprived environments (swamp) transforming over time due to heat and pressure.

16
Q

What is Lithification?

A

Processes by which sediments are transformed into solid sedimentary rock.

17
Q

What is Metamorphism?

A

Is the transformation of one rock type into another.

18
Q

How are metamorphic are rocks form?

A

When rock experience a significant increase in temperature or pressure.

19
Q

What is Drive Metamorphism?

A

Metamorphism is driven by four agents: heat, confining pressure, differential, stress, and chemically active fluids.

20
Q

What are Metallic minerals resources?

A

Many of the most productive deposit of Gold, silver, copper, platinum, nickel, mercury, lead occur in hydrothermal vein deposits.

21
Q

What are Nonmetallic mineral resources?

A

Earth materials are not used as fuels or for metal extraction.

22
Q

What are fossil fuels?

A

Coal, oil and Natural Gas

23
Q

What is Hydraulic fracturing?

A

Hydraulic fracturing: method used to extract oil gases form shale deposits by opening cracks in impermeable rocks so that the natural gas can flow into walls.
