Materials Around Us Flashcards
What are the three different states?
Solids, liquids, gasses.
What are the properties of solids?
Fixed shape unless a force is applied, definite space, you can see and hold it.
What are the properties of liquids?
It can flow and has no fixed shape. It takes the shape of the container.
What are the properties of gasses?
They tend to spread out. No fixed shape. Can be contained.
Give 3 examples of each of solids, liquids and gases.
Solids: rocks, books, wood, etc
Liquids: water, juice, oil
Gas: air, hydrogen, helium
Name the 3 different states of water.
Solid: ice
Liquid: water
Gas: steam
What do we call changing a solid to a liquid?
Melting
What do you call changing a liquid to a gas?
Evaporation
How do you get something to go from solid to liquid to gas?
Heat it up
What do you call getting a liquid to a solid?
Solidifying
What do you call getting a gas to a liquid?
Condensation
How do you get a material from gas to liquid to solid?
Cool it down
What happens to the water volume if you have two saucers with water; one covered in plastic and one uncovered? Why?
Less water in the uncovered one because of evaporation.
What makes water in the sea or ocean evaporate?
The suns heat
Describe the water cycle.
Water from oceans EVAPORATES into clouds. Water vapour condenses in clouds and then rains. If it solidifies because of extreme cold it could form hail or snow.
Describe RAW and MANUFACTURED materials.
Raw materials are materials that occur in nature without human intervention.
Manufactured materials are materials that are raw materials that are processed or changed by humans into something else.
Give 4 examples of each of RAW and MANUFACTURED materials.
Raw: wood, seeds, oil, wool
Manufactured: furniture, paper, juice, glass
Pick an every day product. What are the RAW materials making it?
Example: clothes.
Raw materials are cotton from trees or wool from sheep.
Using the same example of an every day product…how is the raw material processed to make the manufactured product?
Example: clothing
Harvesting of materials, processed by weavers into thread and cloth and then sewn into clothes.
What are forests called where wood is grown for manufacturing? What type of trees are most common?
Plantations of eucalyptus (gum trees) or pine.
Name the main steps in processing logs for paper.
Pulped at the pulp mill.
Washed, bleached, pressed and dried at the paper mill.
Cut up and given to different purposes eg toilet paper, printer paper, etc.
