Energy & Sound Flashcards
How is sound made?
By vibrations in the air
What materials can sound travel through?
Solid, liquid and gases
Such as
Air, plastic, water, metal, wood etc
Describe sound energy
Energy that travels through substances in sound waves
What is an echo?
When the sound wave bounces off a surface and you hear the sound many times
What is a tuning fork?
A metal object with two ping arms. When you tap it, it produces a musical note
What is a sound wave?
The way sound travels through air
What is the ear canal?
A tube that connects the outer ear to the middle ear
What is the ear drum?
It is a thin piece skin inside your ear that vibrates when sound waves hit it
What is a nerve?
A group of long fibers that carries messages between your brain and a part of your body
Describe the process of hearing
- Sound waves travel through the air
- Your or ear (the part you see) catches the sound
- The sound waves travel along the ear canal
- The sound waves make your ear drum vibrate
- The vibrations travel through your tiny bones in the middle ear
- Then the vibrations travel through your cochlea (inner ear)
- A nerve take the message about sounds to your brain
- You hear the sound when the message reaches your brain
What is volume?
How loud or soft a sound is
What is pitch?
How high or low a sound is.
What kind of vibrations give a high pitch?
Quick vibrations
(High frequency)
How do you increase the volume a sound?
Putting in a lot of energy (eg hard blowing into a whistle covered to soft blowing)
On a stringed instrument, how is sound made higher pitch?
Tighten the strings.
Thinner strings.
Shorter strings
On a wind instrument, what kind of tube makes a lower sound?
A longer, thicker tube
What is an audiologist?
A person who tests hearing and fits hearing aids for people who are hearing-impaired
What is a hearing aid?
A small device that fits behind (or inside) the ease that makes sounds louder
What is noise?
Any unwanted sound
What is noise pollution?
When a loud unpleasant or harmful sounds carry on for a long time
What is volume measured in?
Decibels (dB)
What volume of sound will make your hearing slowly get worse?
85dB
What volume sound will damage your hearing right away ?
130dB
What is the Definition of Sound Wave?
the way that sound travels through the air
What makes loud sound?
A fast car, lawnmower, hammer being slammed, gun shooting etc.
What is the Definition of Tuning Fork?
A metal object with two long arms. When you tap it, it produces a musical note sound wave the way that sound travels
