materials Flashcards
how do you determine denstiy of irregular shaped object such as kettle
- measure the mass of the object
- lower the object by a string into liquid in a measuring cylinder observe the volume increase this is the volume of the object
what happens to a spring once it’s streched along it’s elastic limit
it doesn’t regain it’s intial length when the applied force is removed
What is elasticity
The ability of a material to regain it’s shape after it’s been deformed or distorted and the forces that deformed it are released
What is a brittle material
A material that snaps without any noticeable yield
What is a ductile material
A material that can be draw into a wire
what is tensile strain
the extension per unit length of a solid when deformed
what is tensile stress
force per unit cross sectional area in a solid perpendicular to the cross section
what is tensile deformation
deformation that stretches an object
what is compressive deformation
deformation that compresses an object
what is ultimate tensile stress
tensile stress needed to break a solid material
what is the elastic limit
the point beyond which the wire is permanently stretched and suffers plastic deformation
what is plastic deformation
deformation of a solid beyond its elastic limit
what is density
of a substance it is it’s mass per unit volume
what is hooke’s law
the force needed to stretch a spring
is directly proportional to the extension of the spring from it’s natural length up until it’s elastic limit
