materials Flashcards

1
Q

Natural cellulosic
Cotton(seed), hem(bast), linin(bast), jute (bast)

A
  • absorbent
-staple fibres (when cut for hemp)
  • conducts heat away from the body
  • hemp/ jute: quick growing, doesn’t need pesticides or as much water as linen
Jute: used in areas of high humidity and agricultural packing (strong)

Q

natural cellulosic
bamboo, soy, banana

A
  • long (still staple) fibers
  • strong
  • lustrous
  • absorbent
  • similar to silk
soy: uv resistant, anti static, good for vegans, vegetable cashmere

Q

manmade cellulosic
viscose

A
  • from wood pulp with polymers
  • filliment or staple
  • silk wool or cotton
    absorbant (for a manmade fiber)
  • soft against the skin
  • can be made from cotton fibre blend
  • regenerative

Q

manmade cellulosic
acylate

A
  • wood pulp
  • very fine filliment
  • used as microfibre, raincoats, machine thread
  • often crimped
  • shiney
  • static
  • low absorbancy
  • fasty drying
  • cheap alternative to silk
  • lusterous
  • good drape

Q

man made cellulosic lyocell

A
  • generic name for group of fibers from a plant
  • important: tencel
  • long continuos fibre
  • most absorbant fabric
  • similar manafacture to viscose

Q

synthetic polyester

A

not absorbant
prone to static
filliment but can be textured
ofton strong and durable
light weight
hydrophobic
often crease resistant
thermoplastic fibres
can be strong
can be staple (if brushed)

Q

synthetic nylon

A
  • plastic chips melted down and extruded
    thermoplastic
properties can depend on how its spun (flat, textured, staple)
    good elasticity
    bad absorbancy
    can be breathable

Q

synthetic acrylic

A

from acrylonitrile
