Materials Flashcards
What does Elastic mean?
The ability to be deformed by a force, and return back to its original shape once the force is removed.
What does Plastic mean?
The ability to be permanently deformed when a force is applied, and to stay deformed once the force is removed.
What is the area underneath a Force-extension graph?
Work done to create extension.
What is ductile?
Elastic and plastic regions in material before it breaks.
What is malleable?
Extensive plastic deformation and can be compressed without breaking.
What is brittle?
Elastic behaviour up to the breaking point. Will not permanently deform.
What is hard?
Material resists plastic deformation.
What is stiffness?
The ability of a material to resist a tensile force. HIGH YOUNG’S MODULUS.
What is polymeric?
A material mad of long chain polymers.
What is ultimate tensile strength?
Maximum stress a material can withstand before it breaks.
What is loading?
It is the application of a force.
What is hysteresis?
Work done to stretch the elastic band is greater than the work done by the elastic band to get back to its original shape. When loading and unloading, the difference in work done is transferred to heat energy.
What happens to the spring constant of a spring cut in half.
Each half will have double the spring constant of the spring. Imagine if the spring was two springs in series.
