Poverty
Minority ethnic groups more likely to live in poverty, low income houses, or be in poorest fifth of population
Half Pakistani or Bangladeshi, a third of Black Caribbeans live in poverty- compared to a fifth white British
BC, P, and B more likely to be unemployed/live in poorest areas- face poor quality housing, overcrowding, general material disadvantage- affect achievement

Similar problems to poorest section of w/c: material + cutural deprivation, lack of cultural + social capital, teacher attitudes, expectations + labelling, and SFP
Exception- Indian Asian + Chinese Pupils
Number eligible for FSM below national average, more likely to come from business and professional m/c backgrounds, gaining m/c benefits
Variation between class in ethnic groups mean differences may be due to economic/social disadvantage
Gillborn and Mirza
While social class is main influence, social class factors don’t override ethnic differences
Pupils from same social background but different ethnic groups show inequalities in attainment
Order of Attainment
Indian Asian and Chinese do better than white British, do better than Black Caribbean, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani
Exception to Order
House of Commons Education Committee- in most deprived social groups, white British do worst
