Statistics
Around 18% in primary and 13% in secondary don’t have English as first language or main used at home
English not 1st lang of majority of pupils in more than 1 in 9 schools
Difficulties Caused
Difficulty in doing schoolwork or communicating with teachers, whit m/c teachers may mistake lang difficulties for lack of ability
Struggle to make friends
Use of non-standard or heavily accented English may be penalised unconsciously, active discouragement of mother tongue and neg labelling may lead to SFP

Language may hold back some children, but for the majority it was of little importance

Any impact of language declines as children get older, and pre-school language difficulties rapidly overcome
