Materail Enhancments Flashcards
Case hardening
Used on metals to harden the surface and improve wear resistance
What does annealing do to metals
Makes metal easier to work with
Makes it less brittle and more ductile
What do preservatives do to woods
- defends against bug attacks
- increase wear resistance
- can improve hardness for things like flooring
What do resins do to woods?
Used in chipboards
- makes it very stable
- wood is less affected by temperature or humidity
What do laminates do to woods?
Improve prevention from wood defects
What do lubricants do for polymers
- Make it less sticky - easier to work with - allows intricate shapes to be made
What do thermal antioxidants do to polymers
Prevent heat from discolouring polymer
What do pigments do to a polymer
Give colour
What do anti statics do to polymers
Reduces built up static which attracts dust and dirt
What do flame retardants do to polymers
When chemicals like bromine are added it reduces risk of flammability
What do fillers do to polymers?
Improves properties
Requires less polymer due to it adding to bulk
What do antioxidants do to polymers?
Increases longevity of product
What do UV light stabilisers do to polymers
It prevents polymers from being broken down by sunlight
