Matching experimental and control groups Flashcards
1
Q
how to match the overall distribution of the study
A
- exp and control groups have same distribution of extraneous variables
- match based on the frequency of occurrence of each extraneous variable
ex) same number of women and men- age range, IQ
2
Q
regression towards the mean
A
- when observing repeated measurements in the same subject, relatively high or low observation are likely to be followed by less extreme ones nearer the subjects true mean
- true problem=the need to distinguish a real change from this expected change due to the natural variation
3
Q
interactional observer bias
A
-bias affects subjects behavior
4
Q
non-interactional observer bias
A
-error of observation and recording
5
Q
Rosenthal effect
A
- experimenter factors may influence the behavior of research subjects
ex) biosocial, psychosocial, situational variables, modeling effects, self-fulfilling prophecy
6
Q
modeling effects
A
subject behaves like experimenter
7
Q
situational variables
A
experience, familiarity with subjects
8
Q
Inter-experimenter reliability
A
- several different investigators
- replicated with different investigator
9
Q
intra-experimenter reliability
A
consistency of a single investigator
