Matched pairs and data collction experiments Flashcards
What is a matched pairs test?
- Two groups of people are used to test the effects of a particular factor
- Each individual is paired with another individual who has everything in common with them except for the factor being studied
What are the advantages and disadvantages of matched pairs?
Advantages:
Eliminates all extraneous factors
Disadvantages:
Might need to sample a lot of people to find a matched pair
What types of experiments can be used for data collecion?
Laboratory experiment
Field experiment
Natural experiment
What effect does a laboratory experiment have on the environment and varibles?
Controlled environment
Control over all variables
What effect does a field experiment have on the environment and varibles?
Everyday environment
Resercher contolls some variables
What effect does a natural experiment have on the environment and varibles?
Everyday environment
No control over variables
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a laboratoy experiment?
Advantages:
Easy to replicate
Can control extraneous variables
Disadvantages:
Test subjects might behave differently under test conditions compared to real life
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a field experiment?
Advantages:
Replicates real life behaviour
Disadvantages:
Can’t control all of the extraneous variables
Hard to replicate exactly
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a natural experiment?
Advantages:
Replicates real life behaviour
Disadvantages:
No control over the extraneous variables
Hard to replicate exactly
