Averages, outliers, skewness & histograms Flashcards
What are the three types of skew?
Symmetrical, positive or negative skew
Define ‘positive skew’
The median is closer to the lower quartile, with the values above the median spread out more
Define ‘negative skew’
The median is closer to the upper quartile, with the values below the median spread out more
Define ‘symmetrical distribution’
The median is exactly half way between the lower and upper quartiles
What type of skewness is this graph?
Positive skew
What type of skewness is this graph?
Negative skew
What type of skewness is this graph?
Symmetrical distribution/skew
What is the formula for frequency density?
frequency / class width
How do you identify outliers?
Upper bound: Q1 - (IQR x 1.5)
Lower bound: Q3 + (IQR x 1.5)
What are the three main types of average?
Mode, median and mode
How do you work out the mode?
The most common value(s) in the data set, there can be no mode
How do you work out the median?
The middle most value,
can be calculated with n+1 / 2 or n / 2
When do you use n / 2 for the median?
For a cumulative frequency curve
Which average is best if you are considering the demand for items of clothing in different sizes, or when data is non-numeric?
Mode
Which average is best if you are considering the skew of data?
Median
