Routes of infection of mastitis
Occurs when bacteria enter the gland through the teat canal
Overwhelm the natural defences
Colonise the mammary tissue
Occurs when teat canal is open, during the milking process
Outcome of infection is either clinical or subclinical infection
Grades of clinical mastitis
- Changes to the secretion (grade 1)
○ Abnormal colour
○ Watery
○ Clots- Changes to the gland (grade 2)
○ Heat
○ Swelling
○ Pain - Changes to the cow (grade 3)
○ Sick
- Changes to the gland (grade 2)
