Massage and Compression Flashcards
What are the indications for masssage?
- pain
- edema
- muscle spasm
- trigger points
- Bad circulation
- contracted tissue
- specific or general relaxation
How is massage proposed to affect pain?
Gate theory
What are the 3 main functions of the lymoh system?
- remove excess fluid from tissues
- absoprtion of fatty acids
- Production of immune cells
Describe the difference between primary lymphedema and secondary lymphedema.
Primary: rare congenital lack of lymph vessels. example is Milroy’s disease
Secondary: Caused by damage to lymph nodes of vessels.
How does massage address contracted tissue?
Breaks adhesion and can be used to break up scars like in scar tissure massage.
How does massgae address muscle spasm?
Breaks up the pain-spasm-pain cycle.
Give some examples of when increased circulation is not desired
DVT, dermatitis, systemic edema
Massage too soon: Give acture inflamation examples
Appendicitis, RA, Phlebitis,.
OK to work proximal to site.
Give some examples of areas of active bone growth.
Myositis Ossificans, Healing fracture, Osgood-schlatter disease
Why are pregnant women a risk to massage?
DVT risk
Increased blood volume
Soft tissue laxity
Positional issues
What are the precautions for massage (6)
CHARM
- hematomas
- non-union fractures
- herniated disks
- AGe debilitated patients (skin weakness)
- Melignancies
- Collagen weakening (steroids, diebetes, RA)
What are the contraindications for Compression?
Shod Path
- Skin condition
- Hypoproteinemia
- Obstructed lyphatic system
- DVT
- Peripheral artery disease or ulcers
- Arterial revascularization
- Trauma
- Heart Failure and Pulmonary edema
What are the precations for compression pumps?
CUSIN
- Cancer
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Stroke
- Impaired sensation or mentaion
- Nerves (Superficial)
What are the settings for compression pumps?
DVT, edema, VSU: Inflate 80-100s deflate 25-50s
Limb reduction: Inflate 40-60 Deflate 10-15
What are is the pressure setting and time of treatment for compression pumps?
30-80 mmHg
- UE: 30-60 mmHg
- LE: 40-80 mmHg
2-3 hours per treatment
