Cold And Heat Therapy Flashcards
What are the contraindications of cold therapy?
Cold hypersensitivity (vascular skin reaction)
Cold intolerance (pain, numbness, color changes)
Cryoglobulinemia
Cold hemoglobinuria
Raynaud’s disease (Digital cyanosis, excessive reduction in blood flow)
Circulatory compromise or peripheral vascular disease
Where the precautions of cold therapy?
Superficial main branch of artery Over open wound Hypertension Poor sensation or mentation Very young or very old because of impaired thermoregulation
What are the common ways in which you apply cold therapy?
Cold pack, ice massage, Vapocoolant spray, ice bath
What are the effects of heat therapy?
Vasodilation
Reduces sympathetic activity and smooth muscle contraction
Increases nerve conduction velocity
Increases pain threshold via gate theory
Increased collagen extensibility (104-113 degrees for 5-10 min.)
Increased metabolic rate
Increased range of motion
Accelerated healing
What are the contraindications of heat therapy?
Recent or potential hemorrhage Thrombophlebitis (may dislodged blood clot because of increased flow) Impaired sensation or mentation Malignant tumor Infrared radiation over her eyes
What are the first 5 precautions of heat therapy?
Acute inflammation Pregnancy Impaired circulation Poor thermoregulation Edema
What are the second 5 precautions for heat therapy?
Cardiac insufficiency Metal in area of heat application Over an open wound Over topical creams for counterirritants Do demyelination of nerves
What are the 5 most important things to remember when using hot packs?
Store them in water between 158 and 167°F
Cover hot packs in 6 to 8 layers of dry towels (Cover is 2 to 3 layers)
Increase layers if patient is laying on Hot pack
Check every five minutes
Use for between 15 and 20 minutes
Describe the temperature and two types of paraffin keep therapy.
126 to 134°F
Dip wrap , Six layers, 15 total minutes
Dip immersion (Play sand and paraffin for 20 minutes, low temp range)
What is the time and temperature for fluidotherapy?
100 to 118°F for 20 minutes
What is the procedure for the use of infrared lamps as heat therapy?
182 -1500 nm wavelength
Place 45 to 60 cm away and treat for 15 minutes if subacute and 30 minutes if chronic.
Why would we use a combination of hot and cold therapy?
We use this when we want the benefits of heat therapy without increasing edema.
Describe the procedure for using a contrast bath?
A cold bucket at 50 to 64°F is used with a hot bucket and 100 to 111°F.
Emerson hot book it for four minutes and then cold bucket for one minute repeat 5 to 6 times.
What are the effects of cold therapy?
Vasoconstriction Increase blood viscosity Hunting response Nerve conduction velocity decreases within five minutes Increases pain threshold Decreases metabolic rate
