Massage Flashcards
Physiologic effects of massage 4
- Decrease pain via gate control, release endorphins, remove proinflammatory chemicals
- Increase vasodilation
- Improve lymphatic flow. mechanically move fluids and metabolic waste out of interstitial space and into lymphatic system
- Mechanical effects- increase length of soft tissue (scars, muscle, fascia, tendon or ligament). break up adhesions. promote remodeling of collagen fibers
Mechanical effects of massage 5
- Increase length of soft tissue
- break up adhesions
- promote remodeling of collagen fibers
- soften scar tissue
- remove lactic acid
Psychologic effects 2
- Relaxing effect
2. Feeling of being helped
Effleurage
Stroking technique
light amount of pressure
parallel with muscle fibers
purpose to exam, acclimate, relax, decrease pain via gate control
Petrissage
Kneading technique
parallel with muscle fibers
purpose: increase length of tissue, circulation and lymphatic flow
break up adhesions and decrease pain
Tapotement
percussion, light tapping technique
Purpose: decrease pain gate control
increase muscle relaxation and circulation
Vibration
increase relaxation and decrease pain via gate control
Friction Massage 2 types
- Trigger/Circular point massage
2. Cross friction/ Transverse massage
Trigger point
local areas of tenderness that feel like nodular lumps
Technique is firm pressure applied in a small circular fashion
Increases circulation and length of soft tissue
Breaks up adhesions
Transverse friction
Firm pressure, as much as patient can tolerate
Small movements perpendicular to muscle, scar etc
Purpose: re-align collagen fibers and strengthen scar- Wolffs law
may help inflammatory phase progress
Manual lymph drainage
body part should be elevated
start proximally, but work distal to proximal
slow repetitive strokes to push fluid along lymphatic system
Myofascial Release
Relieves fascial adhesions
Fascia that surrounds muscles, tendons, nerves, bones and organs
Contraindications to Massage
Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis embolism severe varicose veins acute phlebitis- vein inflammation cellulitis Synovitis abscesses skin infection cancer acute inflammatory conditions fracture or open wound
