Healing Process Flashcards
Phases of healing
- Inflammatory response
- Fibroblastic repair
- Maturation/remodeling
Inflammatory Stage
Cell injury causes altered metabolism and the release of materials that initial the inflammatory response.
Characterized by: redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness.
Parts of Inflammatory stage
- Cellular response
- Vascular Reaction
- Chemical Response
- Platelet Plug
- Clot formation
Chronic Inflammation
occurs when acute inflammatory response does not eliminate the injuring agent
occurs when the cell is not returned to its normal physiologic state.
Fibroblastic repair
characterized by: scar/collagen formation
48hrs- 6weeks
signs of inflammation subside, granulation tissue forms.
Synthesis of collagen, elastin and ground substance. can form fibrosis
Maturation remodeling
characterized by: modification and adaption of scar/collagen tissue.
3 weeks- several years depending on the injury
Wolff’s Law
the body responds to stress and will adapt
Injury management- acute inflammation
PRICE, limit swelling and circulation. decrease pain, pro-inflammatory chemicals, metabolism
prevent further tissue damage while minimizing loss of function
Injury management- Fibroblastic repair
increase circulation.
prevent further tissue damage while minimizing loss of function
Injury management- Maturation remodeling
increase scar length/mobility
restore normal joint and muscle function.
