Mass movement Flashcards
Name 3 types of mass movement.
(Any 3 of the following)
Landslides.
Rock falls.
Mudflows.
Slumping.
Soil creep.
What are landslides?
They slip as a result of failure within when lubricated, usually following heavy rainfall, occurring on cliffs of softer rocks or deposited material.
What are rock falls?
Occurs from cliffs undercut from the sea or on slopes affected by mechanical weathering like frost action.
What are mudflows?
Surface layers become very fluid and flow downhill following heavy rainfall and saturation of the soils. The nature of the flow is dependent on the level of saturation, type of sediment and the slope angle.
What is slumping?
Where softer materials overlies much more resistant materials, sections of the cliff face may move downwards with a plane side that is concave.
What is soil creep?
A slow but continuous movement of individual soil particles downslope.
What is run-off?
Water that flows over the surface to reach the coastline.
