Mass Movement Flashcards
Read through Lesson 2 on showbie
What is Mass Movement?
Sliding, Slumping & Rock Falls
What is the cause of Mass Movement?
Rainfall & Weathering
Describe what happens in a rock fall?
Fragments of Rock breakaway from the cliff face due to weathering
What processes have already weakened the rock in a Rock fall
Weathering - freeze then thaw
What is the quickest form of Mass Movement?
Rock Fall
What forms at the base of the cliff from the build up of rock falls
A Scree Slope
Describe what happens in a Landslide?
- Blocks of rock slide downhill
- Blocks Maintain contact with the cliffside
- The slide then collects as a pile of rocks on the beach/sea
Where is a landslide more likely to occur?
- Somewhere that is steep
- A greater distance for sediment
to move - less plants to stabilize the
sediment
Describe what happens in a mud slide
Soil that is filled with water (saturated) flows down a slope carrying rocks and debris
When is a mudslide likely to occur?
- After a period of heavy Rain
- Where slopes are very steep
- It is very fast
Describe what happens in slumping
Saturated soil slumps down a curved surface
When does Rotational Slumping Occur?
- On a curved slip plain
- When the soil is saturated
- Where a layer of permeable
(allows liquid through) rock sits
on impermeable rock
