Landforms of Erosion Flashcards
Headlands & Bays
Name the 3 types of rocks that form the coastline?
Igneous Rocks
Sedimentary Rocks
Metamorphic Rocks
What is an Igneous Rock?
When molten material (magma) cools and goes solid
What is Sedimentary rock?
Formed from sediments that have settled at the bottom of a lake, sea or ocean and compressed over millions of years
What is metamorphic rock?
Rocks formed by high heat, high pressure or hot minerals
What is the properties of Hard Rock?
More resistant so it erodes slower
What are the properties of soft rock
Less resistant so they erode faster
Name types of less resistant rock
Sandstone
Clay
Shale
Name types of most resistant rocks
Limestone
Basalt
Granite
Chalk
What is a Headland?
Areas of resistant (hard) rock which protrude from the coastline
What is a Bay?
Areas of less resistant (soft) rock between two headlands, which is quickly eroded
What is a discordant coastline?
This is where there are alternating bands of soft & hard rock (see slide 18
An example of a discordant coastline?
Dorset
