What is a global conglomerate?
One large company/ corporation which owns many other companies around the world
What is horizontal integration?
A large media company owns a diverse range of forms of media
What is vertical integration?
A media company owns other companies which are all part of the production process
What is synergy?
Different forms of media coming together to create themed products
What a diversification?
Media companies expanding into new job media business areas to spread risk
What is allocative control?
Owners will ensure that they employ people who share similar political/ ideological views
What is agenda setting?
Determine the types of wider topic/ issues covered by their media organisation
What is market mechanism?
Media corporations are in competition with each other and are profit seeking businesses
What is ruling class ideology?
A set of beliefs / values and attitudes that support capitalism
What is cultural hegemony?
Capitalist ideologies becoming dominant in our culture so the bourgeoisie can stay in power because we don’t question the system
What is mass media?
A form of communication which reaches a large audience
What is media diversity?
The rising number of different forms of media means that all points of view in a democratic society can be represented
What is compression?
Many data signals to be compressed into tiny signals so that can be sent through the same cable
What is narrowcasting?
Providing entertainment/ information to small audiences rather than aiming at accessing a mass audience at large
What is neophiliac view?
Sees new technology as positive
What is stereotypes?
A standardised and over simplified impression of the characteristics that apply to a certain group
What is symbolic annihilation?
This is when the media does not report on or trivialises the achievement of a group
What is rape culture?
A set of beliefs that supports male sexual aggression and supports violence against women by portraying it as something trivial
what is citizen journalism?
members of the public who record news events, for example, using mobile phone cameras
what is cultural imperialism?
the imposition of western culture on developing world
what is cultural pessimists?
they believe that a globalised mass media has a negative impact upon cultures

the internet and worldwide web
what is desensitisation?
the process by which, through repeated exposure to media violence, people come to accept violent behaviour as the norm
what is ‘copycat’ violence?
violence that occurs as a result of copying something that is seen in the media
what is cross media ownership?
occurs where different types of media e.g. radio and tv stations are owned by the same company
what is false consciousness?
the way in which people’s values are manipulated by capitalism
what is investigative journalism?
journalism that aims to expose the misleads of the powerful
what are gatekeepers?
people within the media who have the power to let some news stories through and stop others

the camera ‘inspecting’ woman in a sexual way in films and tv
what is marginalising?
making a group appear to be ‘at the edge’ of society and not very important
what is ghettoization?
scheduling programmes aimed at ethnic minority groups at times or on channels which ensure small audiences
what is globalisation?
the process in which the world is becoming increasingly interconnected (culturally, politically and economically)
