What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?
A way to classify human needs and motivation into five categories: physiological needs, safety needs , social needs, esteem needs and self-actualisation
Physiological needs
Those relating to the basic biological necessities of life: food, drink, rest and shelter
Safety needs
Safety and security. Protection and stability.
Social needs
Needs are for giving and receiving of affection, companionship, satisfactory interpersonal relationships and identification within a group
Self-Esteem needs
An individual desire for respect, recognition and self confidence.
Employees are motivated by acknowledgment of their achievements through awards bonuses or public recognition.
Self-actualisation
Focuses on fulfilment of ones potential, creativity, and personal growth.
(Challenge employees enable them to use their talents and develop new skills)
