What is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
A theory of psychology explaining human motivation based on the pursuit of different levels of needs. The theory states that humans are motivated to fulfill their needs in a hierarchical order. This order begins with the most basic needs before moving on to more advanced needs.
5 Levels of Needs:
- Physiological needs
- Safety needs
- Belongingness and love needs
- Esteem needs
- Self-actualization needs
Physiological Needs
Physiological needs: food, water, warmth, rest (bed, groceries, home, apartment, clothing)
Safety Needs
Safety needs: security, safety (ring doorbell, alarm system, locks)
Belongingness and Love Needs
Belongingness and love needs: intimate relationship, friends (flowers, chocolate, jewelry, entertainment, trendy clothes)
Esteem Needs
Esteem needs: prestige and feeling of accomplishment (education, gym membership)
Self-actualization Needs
Self Actualization: Achieving one’s full potential, including creative activities (vacation, hobby classes)
