Mary Flashcards
1
Q
How can it be argued Mary experienced a mid-Tudor crisis due to social discontent?
A
-Wyatt’s rebellion of 1554. The severity of this rebellion is emphasised through its proximity to the crown- only stopped at Ludgate. The intention and aims of the rebellion suggest a crisis.

Q
How can it be argued that there was a mid-Tudor crisis in regards to Mary’s foreign policy?
A
- She lacked authority and control abroad; she was forced into war with Spain against France. She was effectively at war with the pope which shows the lack of political authority of her crown within their marriage.
- Jan 1558 defeat; loss of Calais.

Q
How can it be argued Mary did have authority, thus no Mid-Tudor crisis?
A
- In her first parliament she had reversed Ed’s religious laws.
- By her third parliament she had restored papal supremacy and repealed Henry’s Act of Supremacy, which had been in place for 20 years suggests she has authority over parliament.

Q
How is Mary’s long term military success evidence of there not being a mid-Tudor crisis?
A
- She built six new ships in the Spanish design, which strengthened the force of the military.
- The militia act made a permanent standing army. This created long term military stability, possibly increasing foreign stability in the future.
