A

He was able to make significant European alliances which reduced the threat of pretenders:

1492: Invasion of France allowed him to settle the Treaty of Etaples. This treaty secured French withdrawal from support of Perkin Warbeck.
1496: Intercurses Magnus stated that all support for pretenders would be withdrawn.

A

The attempts of pretenders to gain foreign support as well as actually invade:

1495: Warbeck invades England with a force of 2000 mercenaries provided by Margret of Burgundy.
1496: Warbeck offered hospitality and later patronage by James IV. Crosses the border with Scottish troops.

A

1489: Medina del Campo- the arrangement of the hugely significant marriage between Arthur and Catherine. Despite Arthur’s death in 1502 he still managed to secure the alliance again by arranging to marry Henry and Catherine.
1503: Marriage of Margret and James IV in the Treaty of perpetual peace, ensured recognition and withdrew support from Warbeck.

1502: death of Arthur left him isolated and there was tension between Henry and Ferdinand due to Henry’s support for Phillip and Juana meant the marriage between Henry and Catherine would not occur during his reign.

A

Income from trade heavily relied on the cloth trade.
Massive increase in enclosures due to the rising demand for wool.
The economy took a blow during the trade embargo from 93-96 as the almost all of English trade went through Antwerp.

A

Following the black death the income from land had decreased due to enormous mortality rates. It hadn’t fully recovered.

There was a recovery in agriculture in the 80s and 90s.

A

1486: Simnel was declared king in Ireland.

The Earl of Kildare supported Simnel, as well as Warbeck in 1491.

Expensive policy, he tried to ‘rule’ the Pale, and had to use military force to do it, which was not possible given the climate in Scotland.

In 1496 Kildare left the Yorkist cause and began to serve Henry loyally.

By 1500 he had managed to secure a safe and cheap level of control.

A

1495: James IV offered hospitality to Perkin Warbeck. Warbeck also married Lady Catherine Gordon, therefore gained more influence as he gained patronage.
1496: Warbeck crosses the border with an army.
1497: The policy in Scotland led to domestic problems. Henry needed to finance the war, but it caused the Cornish rebellion. A truce was certainly in his interests.

A

From 1498 relations improved significantly. James handed over Warbeck who was executed in 1499.

1502: Treaty of perpetual peace. Marriage of James and Margret.

A

The French had Brittany, threat to England.

1489: Policy in France caused the Yorkshire rebellion.
1489: Treaty of Redon, Anne of Brittany undermined Henry and gave in to the French, leaving him embarrassed and isolated.

Perkin Warbeck exploiting the problem.

Anne marries Charles, Maximillian loses interest. Henry left increasingly isolated.

How did Henry VII recover his position in France?

A

1492: Henry tactfully launches an invasion late into the season, catches the French by surprise, especially as Charles was prioritising his position in Italy, they quickly sought a peace agreement.

November 1492: Treaty of Etaples, annual pension of £5000, withdrew support for Warbeck, promotes trade between the two nations.

A

Arrangements for the royal marriage did not go smoothly, Ferdinand wanted all threat of pretenders to be eliminated before marriage.

Arguments over the size of Catherine’s dowry. Arthur dies in 1502.

1506: Henry supports Juana in the struggle for succession, worsens relations between him and Ferdinand.

Henry outsmaterd by Ferdinand, who ultimately succeeded to the throne in Spain. He made sure the marriage between Henry and Catherine did not go ahead.

A

Providing hospitality to Perkin Warbeck.

Trade Embargo. Effected England more so than HRE. This put Henry’s two foreign policy objects at contest, he prioritised his dynasty over trade, doing nothing for his popularity.
