marxsism- sociological theories Flashcards
Marxism=
there are classes within society
.the whole of society is designed to maintain capitalism (therefore inequality)
Capitalist system =
Ruling classes- Royality and aristocracy
. Religious leaders-clergy
. Military leaders- armed forces
. Upper classes- wealthy, professionals- bourgeoisie
Lower class- worst of in society, called proletariats
. Gets smaller as it progresses up
Relation to crime=
crime is a result of unfavourable conditions (for the working class) in a community such as unemployment/poverty/inequality-therefore the lower classes are responsible.
These classes within society drive the working class to commit crime.
Marx argued that many white-collar crimes (often committed by those in position of power) are not dealt with as harshly due to the fact they are committed by the bourgeoisie. Were as crimes committed by the proletariats are punished more harshly
How does capitalism cause crime
1) Exploitation of the working class- drives people into poverty so crime is the only way to survive
2) Capitalism continually pushes consumer goods at people through advertising, resulting in utilitarian crimes to them e.g. theft
3) Inequality causes feelings of alienation and frustration resulting in non-utilitarian crimes
4) Capitalists cause crime themselves through greed
what do we call a capitalist society=
criminogenic system
supporting research=
. Chambliss-
what did he argue=
laws are made to protect the private property of the rich
. Laws against homeless people squatting in empty houses exists but there are no laws against the rich owning several houses
. Very few laws challenge the unequal distribution of wealth
