labelling theories- sociological theories Flashcards
bekerts and lemerts
2 theories are =
. Beckers labelling theory
.Lemert’s self-fulfilling prophecy
What does beckers labelling theory state?
No act is deviant or criminal, it only becomes so when labelled as such by agents of social control-such as police or judges.
example=
Drunkenness- could be considered deviant or illegal depending on the – time of day, location, weather, the type of alcohol, age, class and gender.
Lemert’s self-fulfilling prophecy
What did he believe =
Labelling causes crime
. Society can encourage certain people to be deviant by labelling them
what are the 2 types of deviance=
Primary deviance= an act of deviance that has not been socially labelled as deviant. Usually uncaught, do not see themselves as criminals.
Examples= spitting
Secondary deviance= an act that has been labelled as deviant. People treat the person differently- this becomes their master status and leads to self-fulfilling prophecy.
Examples= not picking up dog poo
