Marxist view on education Flashcards

Q

What is the Marxist view on education

A
Marxists take a conflict view (rather than consensus) of society -> this conflict is between the Bourgeoisie (middle class) & proletariat (working class) as the middle class are able to exploit the working class for a profit.
They see all of society’s institutions as benefitting capitalism – including the family.

Q

What is the Marxist view on Inheritance

A

> Before capitalism, there was no private ownership and everyone worked together, sharing goods and resources.
Capitalism emerged when labour developed and some took control of this – creating private ownership -> it is here that a monogamous nuclear family is needed for inheritance (men need to be sure their resources are going to their offspring).

> The rich stay Rich and the poor get poorer - Inheritance keeps wealth among the R/C as it is passed down generationally – in the form of businesses, property and assets

Q

What is the Marxist view on Ideology

A

> Family maintains capitalism by passing on R/C ideology through socialisation – i.e. inequality is natural & inevitable.
E.G. socialising children into ‘hierarchy’ & ‘inequality’ as parent (usually Dad) has power over kids & gets them used to idea of someone else being in charge – preparation for working life to do as told by employers.

Q

What is Marxist view on Unit of consumption

A

> Unit of consumption means how the R/C exploits the W/C for a profit. This is by the W/C producing the goods, and the R/C keep the majority of the profit from selling the goods and give the W/C very little.
The family are then targeted by capitalists for their profit, by the uses of media advertisement to urge families to keep up with the latest goods, they target children who use ‘pester power’, and the family end up spending their money they earned, which ultimately goes back to the R/C.
