ENGELS- bourgeois need ways to pass down inheritance and they did this through ‘patriarchal monogamous nuclear family’

•this guarantees that the property will be passed on to their sons as monogamous relationships they have a clear idea of who your own children

OVERTHROWING CAPITALISM IS THE ONLY SOLUTION IN TO A CLASSLESS SOCIETY

•family carries out key ideological factions for capitalism:

1)socialising children into the idea that there will always be hierarchy/inequality

2) parent power- someone in charge which prepares them to be exploited at their workforce

•exploit workers labour for cheap then products are sold for expensive prices

• families generate profits for capitalist:

  • newest product (iPhone, shoes)
  • children have “pester powers” to buy products
  • children are mocked for not having these products

•this maintains capitalist society through consumption

• assume that nuclear family is the dominant family type- in post modernism there is diverse family dynamics

• feminism argue they don’t put enough emphasis on gender equality (abuse, men control)

• functionalist argue they don’t take regard in the benefits of family and what it provides
