•nuclear families allow wealthy to pass down private property to children (PRODUCES CLASS INEQUALITY )
•the nuclear family adapts not for industrialisation but for the capitalist system
•earlier classless society ‘primitive communism’ as there was no private property

ENGELS- bourgeois need ways to pass down inheritance and they did this through ‘patriarchal monogamous nuclear family’
•this guarantees that the property will be passed on to their sons as monogamous relationships they have a clear idea of who your own children
OVERTHROWING CAPITALISM IS THE ONLY SOLUTION IN TO A CLASSLESS SOCIETY
MARXISM FAMILY: Ideological functions
•family carries out key ideological factions for capitalism:
1)socialising children into the idea that there will always be hierarchy/inequality
2) parent power- someone in charge which prepares them to be exploited at their workforce

•family function have proletariat men something to control (be the boss)
•this allows men to be exploited at work but control at home
• Frans Ansley- women are “takers of shit”
MARXISM FAMILY: unit of consumption
•exploit workers labour for cheap then products are sold for expensive prices
• families generate profits for capitalist:
- newest product (iPhone, shoes)
- children have “pester powers” to buy products
- children are mocked for not having these products
•this maintains capitalist society through consumption
MARXISM FAMILY: evaluation
• assume that nuclear family is the dominant family type- in post modernism there is diverse family dynamics
• feminism argue they don’t put enough emphasis on gender equality (abuse, men control)
• functionalist argue they don’t take regard in the benefits of family and what it provides
