Domestic division of labour
The division of task in the household between the partner and if has become more equal
PARSONS: instrumental and expressive roles
Division of lia is based on biologically differences and men and women are suited to these roles
HUSBAND ROLE: instrumental is achieving successful job, provide finances, authoritative and discipline, important decision making
WIFES ROLE: expressive is socialising with, meeting emotionally needs, domestic role
BOTT: joint and segregated conjugal roles
SEGREGATED CONJUGAL ROLES: couples have separate roles (male= breadwinner female=homemaker) the leisure activities tend to be separate
HOINT CONJUGAL ROLES: couples share task such as housework, childcare, and spend leisure time together
WILLMOTT + YOUNG: symmetrical family
•march of progress= family life is gradually improving (equal + democratic )
•leaving segregated conjugal roles and going towards symmetrical family

•women doing paid work has not created more equality but increased burden (dual burden + triple shift)
BSAS- men do 8 hours of house work and women do 13 hours of house work weekly
hohchild- emotional work, women are responsible for managing the house emotions
