Marx and Media Studies Flashcards
What is Marx’s idea on human freedom?
Collective action should be used to guide us toward individual freedom
What is a problem with the higher efficiency of labour?
Instead of it being used for disposable time, capitalists see it to be used for a surplus of labour
The way production is set up leaves the worker with a sense of alienation
Estranged Labour
What does marx mean by estranged labour?
Production processes leaves the worker feeling alienated from the product, themselves, human identity, and others
What are the 4 types of estrangement noted my Marx?
- Alienation from the product
- Alienation from labour
- Alienation from human identity
- Alienation from others
The worker creates what they cannot possess
Alienation from the product
Our labour is coerced, if we do not produce, we cannot survive
Alienation of labour/process
We only truly exist during the periods we are not producing
Alienation of labour/process
Explain alienation of labour/process
since we do not really have a choice in working/producing, we are not being our true selves during that time. We only really exist outside of work, and we are alienated to the process of work itself.
When working becomes something to do to survive, rather than something we do naturally as ‘world builders’, our existence becomes void
Alienation of man/species being (human identity)
