What are Christian beliefs about Marriage?
Marriage is a gift from God - it is part of God’s plan for men and women to live together as stated in the bible.
Marriage is seen to provide security and a stable environment for children to be raised as Christians.
Explain two reasons why marriage is important to Christians. In your answer you much refer to a source of wisdom.
Marriage is important because it provides companionship, friendship and support between husband and wife. It is also a life long commitment to another person, establishing a permanent and stable relationship, thereby also providing stability to society through the teaching of good moral and social behaviour.
“God made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”
What are non-religious attitudes to marriage?
Humanists do not accept marriage as a religious institution blessed by God. but they do accept marriage in a secular senes as a couple making a commitment to each other.
What is the nature and importance of sexual relationships?
Sex is a gift from God intended for procreations, therefore they believe that sex should only take place within marriage. They also believe that sex is an important way for a man and woman to show commitment to each other. All forms of sexual activity outside of marriage is forbidden
Explain two Christian teachings from the Bible about the nature of sexual relationships.
Sexual relationships should take place within marriage and should be exclusive because the Ten Commandments states a person “should not commit adultery”.
Another teaching is that sexual relationships should only be between a married couple for the purpose of procreation as this is what the Bible says God’s intention for humans is.
Outline three purposes of family
- To provide the right place for a married couple to have children
- To provide stability and security for society, as children can be raised in the correct social and moral setting
- to raise children as christians and introduce them to the christian faith
What is the importance of roles within the family?
Parents - most christians believe that they have a responsibility to get married and have children, if able, as this is what God intended. They also have a responsibility to love, support and care for their children and to raise their children as christians.
Children - The bible teaches that children should honour, obey and respect their parents. They are expected to car for their parents in their old age, just as their parents once cared for them.
Outline three ways in which the local parish can support families
- Supporting couples who are expecting children e.g. by organising classes and social events
- providing counselling support
- running parental support classes
Explain two reasons why the local parish believes it has a responsibility to support families
It is in line with Jesus’ teachings on the importance of caring for others. Helping families in the local community can provide structure and stability to society. It is through the family that children can be introduced to Christianity. They can learn about their faith and the teachings in the bible.
Outline three reasons why support given by the parish to the family is important today
- The support of the parish demonstrates the love of God, as family was part of his intention for humanity.
- The parish allows Christians so socialise with others who share their faith and beliefs.
- The. parish provides practical, emotional and spiritual support
What are the different types of contraception?
Natural - rhythm method, couple has sex when the woman is not ovulating
Artificial - couple use human made objects designed to prevent pregnancy.
Explain two reasons why there are different Christian attitudes to contraception
Christians may hold different vies about the purpose of sex, which impacts on their views about contraception. Some may believe that sex is only for having children, meaning they won’t use contraception.
Some christians hold different views about the various types of contraception. Some may accept natural methods, while others will also accept artificial methods.
Outline three reasons why some Christians may be against divorce
- Marriage is a sacrament and getting a divorce would break the promises made with God.
- Divorce is not recognised because marriage is for life
- Remarriage is not accepted. If a divorce person remarries, the ceremony cannot be held in a Catholic Church

Outline three beliefs about the role of men and women in the family
Christians believe that men and women were made equal by God but given different roles. Some Christians believe that men are the providers and women are the home-keepers. Some Christians may also believe that women should submit to their husbands in their roles.
“It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make a helper suitable for him” (Genesis 2:18)
What is gender prejudice and gender discrimination?
Gender prejudice: when a person is judged on their gender to be superior or inferior
Gender discrimination: when a person is treated differently from another person as a direct result of their gender.
