Crime And Punishment Flashcards
Outline three Muslim teachings about justice
- Muslims believe they will be judged in the afterlife on how just they have been in their lives
- Justice is what Allah intended for his creation
- The Quran contains many teachings that reference ideas of Justice
Explain two reasons why justice is important for Muslims.
It is what Muslims believe Allah intended. The Quran teaches this and Muslims will try to stand up for justice so they can please Allah and follow his teachings. The Quran says: “O you have believed, be persistently standing firm in Justice” (surah 4:135)
Justice is also important to Muslims because Shari’ah law is considered to be the laws of Allah and Muslims want to follow them to be rewarded in the afterlife. There, they want to behave and act in a just way in they lives.
Outline three Muslim response to crime
- They may teach about the importance of avoiding crime
- They may refer to Quranic teachings to show that crime is wrong
- They may reinforce the belief that Allah will judge Muslims after death on the way they have behaved in life
Explain two reasons why Muslims work to end crime
- They believe they have a duty from Allah to care for others in society. Muslims believe Allah created all humans to be equal and this means they should support each other and try to make society just and fair.
- Muslims believe they should try to follow the example of prophet Muhammad. Muslims believe prophet Muhammad helped others and tried to improve their lives, so they should do the same for Allah.
Explain two different Muslim teachings on suffering
- Muslims believe that there is a reason why they suffer. It is part of Allah’s plan, although Muslims do not know what this is.
- Muslims believe that suffering is a test of their Fatih and character. Allah gave humans free will and they need to choose right or wrong in order to deserve the reward of going to heaven in the afterlife.
Explain two reasons why punishment is important for Muslims
- The Quran teaches the importance of punishment. Muslims believe a just society is what Allah intended and they should try to put this into action.
- Punishment creates a fair and just society. The Quran and the example of Muhammad shows that this is important in society.
Explain two reasons why Muslims believe punishment is needed in society
- The Quran teaches the importance of justice and punishment is part of this. It teaches that Allah intended for a just and fair society, so punishment for a crime works to achieve this: “And We ordained for them therein a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth and for wounds is legal retribution” (Sarah 5:45)
- Punishment maintains order and stability in society. Shari’ah law is based on the principles of justice, equality and order and generates suitable punishments.
Outline three aims of punishment for Muslims
- To protect society
- To offer opportunity for the offender to reform
- To deter other offenders form committing crime
Explain two reasons why restorative justice is important to Muslims 0
It give the offender and victims the opportunity to restore peace which is important. Islam teaches the importance of forgiveness and Muslims should follow Allah’s example fo being forgiving.
Muhammad taught that people should forgive others when they do wrong and are sorry. Muslims believe they should follow the example of Muhammad and following an offender allows everyone to move forward with their lives.
Explain two reasons why forgiveness of offenders is important for Muslims
Forgivness is a key teaching in Islam. The Quran teaches Muslims to give and they follow the example of Muhammad who was forgiving.
Islam teaches that Allah is compassionate and merciful and wants humans to be the same. By forgiving the offender, Muslims are demonstrating how Allah wants them to live and following his will.
Explain two reasons why fair treatment of criminals is important to Muslims
Muslims believe that all humans were created by Allah and deserve equal respect and dignity. They accept that all life is sacred and holy, therefore even if a person has done wrong, they deserve a level of respect in their treatment.
Allah is seen by Muslims as just and merciful and Muslims want to apply these characteristics to their lives. They believe that they will be judged after death by Allah on their actions, so acting fairly and in a just way towards others will help them to be rewarded.
Explain two reasons why some Muslims might support the use of the death penalty
Shari’ah law agrees with the Quran about the use of capital punishment for the most serious crimes. This code of behaviour is refereed to in law courts when considering what punishments to give, so capital punishment can be considered.
The Quran states that capital punishment is an option that can be considered in cases of punishment. For the most severe crimes, some Muslims may feel that this teaching should be applied.
Explain two reasons why some Muslims might oppose the use of the death penalty
Some muslims may use the argument that life is special and sacred and it is not the place of humans to take it away in any circumstances but it is up to God as he will judge everyone based on their actions.
The Scholars of Shari’ah law do not agree when or how the death penalty should be applied, showing there are differences in opinion.
Outline three purposes of capital punishment
- To act as a deterrent for other criminals
- To make sure victims feel as though justice has been served
- To make sure the offender cannot commit the same crime again.
