Marriage
Companionship, friendship, support. RoP. Sexual relationship, stable environment for family. Lifelong commitment, society stable. Sacrament, sacred, binding, gift from God, not everyone. Non-religious, commitment not religious.
Sexual relationships
Only married, God’s gift, procreation, adultery forbidden, loyalty, heterosexual, cohabitation forbidden. Alternate, outdated, love important, cohabitation allowed, any sexuality, can be for pleasure. Non-religious, allowed if harmless.
Family purposes and types
Types, nuclear, same-sex, blended, extended, single-parent. God’s intention for humanity, right environment for children, stability/security, correct setting, raise children as Christians and multiply.
Roles within a Christian family
In family, parents married, have children, love/support/care for children, raise Christian. Children honour/obey/respect parent, care when elderly, Church is family, community supports. Strengthens society, where safest.
Family role in local parish
Parish helps support expecting couples, organise events, parental support, RoP involvement, encourage Sunday School, counselling. Children learn Christianity, parish cares for one another (teaching), counselling solves family issues. Family important in Christianity, community believed responsible to emotional/spiritual support (demonstrates God’s love). Allows socialising with others, strengthens community.
Family planning
Contraception types, natural (pull-out, infertile), artificial (human-made). Catholic, responsibility to procreation, prevents purpose, would casual sex, natural allowed. Protestant, pleasure allowed, sensible planning, not against teachings. Non-religious, allowed.
Divorce
Catholic, marriage permanent, Jesus “divorce’s wrong”, sacrament (breaks promise), bond unbroken, separation/annulment only. Protestant, unencouraged, unless necessity, acceptable, can make mistakes (atonement). Non-religious, unencouraged, unless necessity.
Men and women in family
Humans ‘imago dei’, woman ‘helpmate’ for man. Most say “men providers, women carers” outdated, argued women equal. Catholics, man physically different, woman to assist. Non-religious, modern beliefs (equal).
Gender prejudice and discrimination
Catholic, only men can be a bishop, priest, deacon or pope. Represents Jesus, a male. Many promote equality, like most Protestants (teachings). Non-religious, men/women equal.
