Q

Why do Catholics disagree with divorce?

A

Jesus taught it was wrong.
Marriage is a sacrament and so this covenant with God can’t be ‘broken by any earthly power’ like divorce.
The Catechism teaches marriage can’t be dissolved. Because of this, remarriage would mean bigamy and adultery.

21
Q

What is an annulment?

A

A statement by the Catholic Church saying a marriage wasn’t true, so the couple can remarry.

22
Q

Why do non-Catholic churches allow divorce?

A

Jesus allowed divorce for adultery in Matthew 19.
It could be the lesser of two evils in a broken marriage.
Repentance means that couples can have another chance if the want to make it work.

23
Q

What do atheists think about divorce and remarriage?

A

They view marriage as a human institution and so allow divorce. Some atheists don’t believe in marriage, choosing to cohabit instead.

24
Q

What do Humanists believe about divorce and remarriage?

A

All married couples have the right to separate. Divorce should ensure the spouses are financially stable and that children are well provided for. The divorced people are then free to remarry.

25
Q

What do Evangelical Protestants teach about gender prejudice and discrimination?

A

Women are not equal to men because they have separate roles. Women shouldn’t speak in church, can’t teach and have to submit to their husbands. Men have to provide for and lead the family in religion.

26
Q

What does the Catholic Church teach about gender discrimination and prejudice?

A

The Catechism teaches that men and women are equal. However, only men can be priests because they the role of Jesus in Mass, all the apostles were men and bishops and priests are their successors. Women can become extraordinary ministers and assist the priests.

27
Q

What do Liberal Protestants believe about gender discrimination and prejudice?

A

Men and women should have completely equal lives. This is because Genesis 1 says that men and women were created at the same time with equal status.

28

A

WOW (Women’s Ordination Worldwide), MOW (Movement for the Ordination of Women) and Women and the Church.

29

A

30
Q

What have Women and the Church campaigned for and how successful have they been?

A

They campaigned for gender equality in the Church of England. In 2013, the first woman bishop was ordained.

31
Q

What have WOW campaigned for and how successful have they been?

A

They campaign to end gender discrimination and convince the Vatican to allow women to be priests. In 2015, Pope Francis replied by saying ‘women priests, that cannot be done. Pope St John Paul II after long, long intense discussions, long reflection, said so clearly.’

32
Q

What are atheist and Humanist views towards gender discrimination and prejudice?

A

They believe men and women are equal and deserve equal rights. Humanists are against sexism and believe it is wrong for religion to discriminate against women. They think it should be illegal to refuse to ordain women.
