Living The Christian Life Flashcards
What are sacraments? What are the sacraments of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches?
Sacraments are an outward sign of an inward gift from God. The 7 sacraments are: baptism; confession; Eucharist; confirmation; the anointing of the sick; holy orders; marriage.
Why must Christians be baptised?
It is necessary to receive salvation.
It makes a person a member of the Church.
It makes a person pure.
It allows them to receive other sacraments.
How do Catholic priests carry out infant baptism?
Parents and godparents make promises to raise the child as Catholic. The priest pours water on the child and baptises it in the name of the Trinity. The child is anointed with Chrism and the godparents have a lit candle to hold.
What do Baptist Christians believe about baptism?
It should be believer’s baptism (an adult choice to follow God) by total immersion in a baptismal pool where ministers baptise in the name of the Trinity.
How do Catholics celebrate Mass (or Eucharist)?
Catholics are expected to attend Mass every Sunday. It includes confession and absolution (pardoning of sins through the priest’s actions), prayers of intercession and transubstantiation. After this people exchange the peace and take the consecrated host and wine. The remaining hosts are put in the tabernacle.
Why is Mass important to Catholics?
Because it reminds them of eternal life and they believe that during Mass the wine becomes His blood and the bread becomes His body.
How is Eucharist celebrated in Methodist churches?
It is celebrated as Holy Communion once a month. The bread is normal bread and the wine is non-alcoholic.
Why is Eucharist important to Methodists?
They believe Communion is remembrance of what Jesus did for them and it brings unity and peace and closeness to Jesus.

It unites Christians and reminds them that they share faith no matter who and where they are.

Maundy Thursday reminds them of Eucharist.
Holy Week reminds them of salvation and the suffering Jesus faced. This gives them strength to face their own suffering.
How is Easter Day celebrated?
Catholics celebrate with an Easter Vigil and a ceremony of light to remind them of the darkness of the tomb and the light of the resurrection. A renewal of baptismal vows is given to remind them of rebirth.
