what are 2 humanist attitudes to marriage?
what are the changing attitudes ?
-Humanists and atheist believe that it is up to the individual whether they marry or just live together but relationships should be exclusive (one at a time)
-Many marry because it gives the relationship more stability and legal protection especially if children are involved
CHANGING ATTITUDES:
-Most people now have sex before marriage and most couples cohabit before they marry.Marriage is no longer seen as for life as divorce is accepted. Marriage is also not seen as religous as most weddings are not held in the church
what are 3 the christian responses to changing attitudes?
SOWAAS?

-Liberal protestants accept new attitudes but encourage christians to marry esepcially if they want to start a family
-Many christians especially young ones ignore the official teachings and accept new attitudes
SOWAAS:
‘‘therefore what god has joined together let no one separate’‘-marriage is important because it unites 2 people in their faith, god recognises that it is an unbreakable bond
what does christianity teach about sex?
what are 2 christian teachings about sexual relationships outside of marriage?
-That it is a gift from god and should be enjoyed between one man and one woman who are both married and for the procreation of children
CHRISTIAN TEACHINGS:
-christians are opposed to pre-marital (sexual activity before marriag) becuase it is condemned by the bible and church teachings
-all christians are against adultery becuase it breaks the wedding vows and is condemned by the 10 commandments and by jesus in the gospels
what are humanists and atheist attitudes to sexual relationships?
-Humanist and atheist accept sex before marriage and cohabitation becuase they believe that it should be the choice of people involved
-They think sex should be consensual and be between people of age and should not involve cheating
what are 3 christian attitudes to same sex relationships?
-Catholics- being homosexu.al is not a sin but homosexual relationships are a sin but is less opposed to civil partnerships and teaches that it is sinful to attack or harass homosexuals.
The reason for this view is:
-bible condems homosexual sexual activity
-church teaches that sexual activity should be creative and homosexuals can not have procreative sex
-Evangelical protestants believe that homsexuality is a sin they do not accept same sex marriages they believe that the power of the spirit can change people’s sexual preferences. They believe this becuase the bible condemns homosexuality
-Liberals believe that lifelong homosexuality is acceptable. They have homoseuxal ministers and priests and provide blessings for civil partnerships becuase they believe the bible reflects idea of the time rather than god’s will
what are non-religious attitudes to same sex-relationships?
what are christian responses to non-religious attitudes?
-Humanists and the vast majority non-religious people see no problems with sexual relations between homosexuals
-Christian responses to non-religious attitudes:
-roman catholic and evangelical churches have condemned non-religious attitude and insisted that homosexual christians should refrain from all sexual activity and ban same-sex marriages
-liberals have welcomed homosexuals into the church but will not perform same sex marriages in church
what are the 5 types of families?
-Nuclear families- mother father and children
-Single parent families-children living with only one of their parents
-Same sex parent families-families which are headed by 2 women or 2 men equality act 2010 accepted
-Extended families-3 generations (grandparents mother father children) living in the same hoise or in close proximity
-Blended families-2 seperate families joined together by a parent from one family marrying a parent from the other family
what is the purpose and importance of families ?
All christians believe parents should:
-ensure that physical needs and material needs for children are met
-instil more values into their children so they become good and responsible citizens
-bring the children up in the christian faith and do their best to ensure that the children become christian adults
PURPOSE:
-christian marriage is to have children and bring them up in a secure loving christian environment so that they will come to love god and follow jesus. Family is the place where children learn the difference between right and wrong it is also the place where children are introduced to faith and so is very important for christian to continue to grow
what are different christian attitudes?
sowaas?
-Some christians believe that the purpose of family is to make sure that children are educated to think for themselves so that they can make their own minds about religion when they are old enough
SOWAAS:
‘‘‘’Honour your father and mother’’-
Children should be respectful of their parents because they
gave them life, love and faith; this should be reciprocated in
later life, when roles are reversed and children should look
after their parents
‘’Let the little children come to me and do not hinder
them’’
Families should take their children to the Church to educate
them about their faith and the Kingdom of God
what is a parish?
what is diocese?
-An area around a local church and has a parish priest
-Diocese is a collection of parishes under the control of a bishop

-Most parish clergy are available for help with family and marital problems
-Most churches run toddler groups, youth clubs which help parents to bring up their children as good christian
why parishes try to help families? (4)
-Parishes try to help families because they have a duty to help children baptised or dedicated in church
-Church teaches that of the main purposes of chrisitan marriage is to have children and bring them up to love god and follow jesus so its the responsibility of the parish to assist
-Christians believe the family is the most important part of society and without the family society would collapse so the parish has a social as well as sacred duty to help parents with family life
-If the parish does not help the family christianity will not grow
why support from the church is important for christian families? (3)
-Raising children as christians means taking them to church regularly and that requires the church to be helpful to children
-Teaching children about christianity requires knowledge and expertise in the faith that parents are not likely to have so church scools and sunday schools are able to provide that support
-For catholic/anglican and orthodox taking part in sacraments is essential that requires the help of the church
