-Liturgical worship is a public worship that uses service with set prayers and rituals so that everything follows the same format
-Set form of liturgy means that rituals have developed to help worshipper’s feel close to god people can join in at set points the words are familiar
-The clergy wears special vestments
-Worship follows the liturgical year which begins at advent to pentecost
-Readings follow a 3 year and are set out in a lectionary which enables congregations to hear most of the bible read every 3 year
-Roman catholic,orthodox and many anglican churches they use it for holy communion funeral,marriages

Extempore prayers=prayers without preparation
Lectionary= a list of bible readings to be read at certain times of the year

-Leader of is free to chose the hymns prayers and bible readings
-The main focus of the service is the sermon which can be on a theme of the leader’s choice
-Music in the form of hymns is often a major part of non-liturgical worship
-Prayers are extempore rather than following a set form though they usually include confession,thanksgiving
-Pentecostal type churches there will be more congregational participation and modern music

-Type of worship many christian families have at home such as saying grace before meals having family prayers and celebrating the festivals of the christian year.Many churches also have public worship in informal ways especially for families or young people such as ‘‘messy church’’

Important to have different types of worship:
-liturgical worship helps christians worship god in a familiar way so that worship becomes part of their lives
-Public worship gives a sense of belonging to a whole community of believers
-worshipping as a family brings family together
-Private worship allows people to communicate with god one to one and express emotions they cannot express infront of others

-necessary for the person to receive salvation
-makes a person a member of church
-washes away original sin and makes the person pure
-allows them to receive the other sacraments
-Catholic christians are usually baptised as babies.Parents make promises to raise them as catholics. Priest pours water over the child baptising it in the name of the trinity.He annoints the child with the oil of chrism and godparents are given a lighted candle to hold
-Baptist christians practise believers baptism by total immersion they believe that people need to make their own decision to become a member of christ’s church
when does the eucharist begin?

-Begins with the last supper of jesus had with his disciples
-Eucharist is part of service known as mass.Catholics are expected to attend mass every sunday.The mass includes confession and absolution prayers of intercession to help others,a special prayer changing bread and wine into the body and blood of christ
why is the mass important to catholics? what is eucharist known as in the methodist church?
what do methodists believe?
-They believe that during mass the bread and wine are turned into the body and blood of christ joining them with jesus
-Eternal life they will get
-In the methodist church eucharist is known as the holy communion and is usually celebrated once a month.Methodists believe holy communion is a rememberance and the bread and wine do not change but it does bring unity and peace and closeness to jesus (bread-normal wine-non alcholic)
what are 4 main purposes of prayer?
-Adoration=praising or adoring god for what he is
-Thanksgiving=thanking god for his general goodness or specific
-Confession=confessing sins to god asking his forgiveness
-Supplication=asking for gods help either for oneself or for others
what are 4 ways prayer can be expressed?
-Vocal prayer=when words are used either out loud or mentally
-Meditation=thinking about religious matters
Contemplation=communion with god
-Set prayer=liturgical worship or their own prayers
what is the lord prayer?

-Main christian prayer.Christians use it in both public and private prayer.It was taught by jesus in the gospels.Lord’s prayer expresses adoration,confession,supplication
-Set prayers are used in liturgical worship it can also be used by christians in their personal prayer when they wake up or go to bed.Other christians will use informal prayers on these occasion
what are 3 reasons why christians pray?
-Prayers of thanksgiving helps christians realise they depend on others and not take things for granted
-Prayers of confession help christians face up and learn from their mistakes so that their life improves
-Prayers of supplication can help christians to feel they are doing something for those who suffer can inspire them to do something practical to help the less fortunate
what is pilgrimage?
what are 3 reasons why christians go on pilgrimage?
Pilgrimage journey to a place of religious importance
3 reason why
-Because jesus went on pilgrimages to jerusalem
-to become closer to god
-to be cured from illness or gain inner strength to cope with illness’s
what is the pilgrimage for jersualem?
-Jerusalem is the major centre of christian pilgrimage.It’s where the crucial events of the last week of jesus life took place.Important sites are the cenacle (jesus institued the eucharist at the last supper) the via dolorosa (route jesus was made to carry his cross to golgotha)
-Walsingham village in norfolk which had a copy of mary’s house which nazareth built based on a vision.It was rebuilt after the reformation and pilgrims feel close to ‘our lady of walsingham’ when they pray there.The shrine brings anglicans and catholics together and healings have taken place there.
